Cooked pinto beans in the Instant Pot.

Cooking Beans from Scratch for the Win

Buying dry beans in bulk is one of the best ways to stretch your grocery budget. A 1-pound bag of pinto beans costs $1.08 at my local Walmart and yields about 6 cups of cooked beansโ€”the equivalent of four 15-ounce cans, which can cost $4โ€“6 total.

If youโ€™re looking for ways to cut back on your grocery bill without sacrificing nutrition or flavor, mastering homemade beans in the Instant Pot is a simple and powerful step.

How to Make Instant Pot Pinto Beans (No Soak Method)

Step 1: Rinse the beans. Place the pinto beans in a fine mesh strainer. Rinse well under cold water and remove any stones or debris.

Step 2: Add to the Instant Pot. Add the rinsed beans, 8 cups of water, and salt (if using) to the Instant Pot.

Step 3: Pressure cook. Secure the lid and set the valve to โ€œSealing.โ€ Pressure cook on High Pressure for 25 minutes.

Step 4: Quick release remaining pressure. When the cook time ends, carefully switch the valve to โ€œVentingโ€ for a quick release of pressure.

Step 5: Strain and serve. Drain the beans, and theyโ€™re ready to use in your favorite recipesโ€”or cool and store for later.

  2. Add soaked beans, 4 cups of water, and salt to the Instant Pot.
  3. Pressure cook on High Pressure for 10 minutes.

Recipe FAQs

How do I know when pinto beans are fully cooked?

They should be tender and creamy but still hold their shape. You should be able to easily mash one with a fork.

Can I use this method for other beans and legumes?

Each type of bean has a slightly different cook time. Check out my other Instant Pot Beans for specifics:

Can I cook beans in broth instead of water?

Yes! Swap water for vegetable broth or low-sodium chicken broth to infuse more flavor. Save the strained broth to use in soups or stews.

How much do pinto beans expand when cooked?

1 pound of dried pinto beans yields about 6 cups of cooked beans, the equivalent of 4 cans.

Do I need to adjust cook time if I double the recipe?

Nopeโ€”the cook time stays the same. Just make sure you donโ€™t go over the fill line of your Instant Pot.
